Welcome to Interstate 101!

The United States Interstate Highway System, formally known as the The Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate & Defense Highways, is a nation-wide system of fast and efficient superhighways. This site was created to help you understand the Interstate Highway System.

For more information, please visit one of the sections below.

  • History. The plan for the current Interstate System was proposed in 1952 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Find out why the Interstate Highway System was created and where it's taking us.
  • Design. Here, you can learn about the underlying design principles of the Interstate Highway System to make it easier for you to navigate areas of the country you've never visited.
  • Tolls. Without funding, the Interstate Highway System would never have been built. Find out how highways are funded, and get more information about everyone's favorite part of the highway: the tolls.
  • Ecology. The combination of fast-moving cars, chemicals, and suburban sprawl can be dangerous to animals and the environment. On this page, you can find out why.
